Our hygienists will provide a thorough cleaning and polish, but much more importantly, the hygienist’s main work is to prevent and treat gum disease.

Our highly skilled and gentle hygienists will show you the best ways to keep your teeth free of plaque. Plaque is a sticky, whitish deposit that forms on your teeth when bacteria mixes with food and saliva. The bacteria in plaque produce chemicals that cause gum disease.

In turn, if untreated, this can lead to bleeding gums, gum shrinkage and, ultimately, tooth loss.

Our mouths are full of bacteria, known as plaque. The build-up of this plaque on our teeth causes inflammation of the gums, known as Gingivitis.

• Gingivitis
  The gums around your teeth become red, swollen, and often bleed when you brush your teeth. This is the earliest sign of gum disease and shouldn’t be ignored. Gingivitis is completely reversible with daily brushing, flossing and regular professional cleans by a hygienist.
• Periodontitis
  When gingivitis isn’t treated, it can lead to inflammation around the tooth, known as Periodontal disease. This causes irreversible destruction of the supporting gums and bone around your teeth. The gum starts to pull away from your teeth and form spaces known as ‘pockets.’

This can lead to tooth loss, which we want to prevent as much as possible!

Our highly skilled, gentle hygienists will provide a full clean and polish and create a tailored treatment plan for your oral health care needs. They will thoroughly examine your gums and structures that support the teeth to help identify, prevent, protect, and, if necessary, treat them for gum disease.

We will ask you about your current at-home dental care routine, diet and lifestyle and provide advice on improvements we can make. And will incorporate both a rigorous at-home oral health care routine as well as in-practice visits.

We generally recommend once or twice a year visits to our Dental Hygienist/Periodontal Specialist, depending on your needs.
