With advances in implant dentistry, here at Brigstock Dental & Implant Centre we now have many innovative techniques for denture stabilisation.

Dental implants can transform your comfort, self-esteem and self-confidence.

The Process

The implants are titanium screws placed into the jaw, to replace original roots. Depending on the treatment, you may need between 4 and 8 implants to secure each denture in place. It’s a straightforward process which can be completed under local anaesthetic.  The implants will need three to six months to heal and bond with your jaw bone to provide a solid support for your replacement tooth.

Temporary replacement teeth are usually fitted at the same time as your implant placement, which will stay in place until the final restoration appointment.

Once your jaw has healed, an abutment will be fixed to the implant to hold your denture in place. Abutments are produced in titanium, gold or porcelain, and can come as a standard fit or crafted specifically for you. These options offer a range of aesthetics results, depending on your requirements.

Dentures are then fitted on top, to replace your missing teeth. The implant dentist will carefully match the colour of your crown to your natural teeth.

What is Sinus Lift used For?

A sinus lift is done when there is not enough bone in the upper jaw or the sinuses are too close to the jaw for dental implants to be placed.

There are several reasons for this:

Many people who have lost teeth in their upper jaw — particularly the back teeth or molars — do not have enough bone for implants to be placed. Because of the anatomy of the skull, the back of the upper jaw has less bone than the lower jaw.
Bone may have been lost because of periodontal (gum) disease.
Tooth loss may have led to a loss of bone as well. Once teeth are gone, bone begins to be resorbed (absorbed back into the body). If teeth have been missing for a long time, there often is not enough bone left to place implants.
The maxillary sinus may be too close to the upper jaw for implants to be placed. The shape and the size of this sinus varies from person to person. The sinus also can get larger as you age.

Sinus lifts have become common during the last 15 years as more people get dental implants to replace missing teeth.

You will need X-rays taken before your sinus lift so the dentist can study the anatomy of your jaw and sinus. You also may need a special type of computed tomography (CT) scan.

This scan will allow the dentist to accurately measure the height and width of your existing bone and to evaluate the health of your sinus.

How is a Conventional Sinus Lift done?

Sinus lifts can now increasingly be completed in a minimally invasive way with the advent of new techniques (Versah) which can avoid a more invasive conventional sinus lift procedure.

Whether this is feasible depends on the situation and the implant dentist will discuss the options with you following the CBCT scan.

Your surgeon will cut the gum tissue where your back teeth used to be. The tissue is raised, exposing the bone. A small, oval window is opened in the bone. The membrane lining the sinus on the other side of the window separates your sinus from your jaw. This membrane is gently pushed up and away from your jaw.

Granules of artificial bone-graft material are then packed into the space where the sinus was. The amount of bone used will vary, but usually several millimetres of bone is added above the jaw. Once the bone is in place, the tissue is stitched closed.

In some cases, the implants can be placed at the same time, but in some cases, patients may need to wait six months before implantation. This allows time for the grafted material to mesh with your bone. The amount of time depends on the graft material that was used.

Follow-up

After the procedure, you may have some swelling of the area. You may bleed from your mouth or nose. Do not blow your nose or sneeze forcefully. Either one could cause the bone graft material to move and loosen the stitches.

You also will be given pain medicine, an antibiotic and an antimicrobial mouthwash to help prevent infection. Most patients have only a little discomfort after a sinus-lift procedure.

You will see the dentist again after 7 to 10 days. He or she will evaluate the surgical site and remove the stitches.

After a sinus lift, you need to wait six months for the bone material to harden and integrate into your jawbone. Depending on the grafting material used, implants may be placed at the same time as the sinus lift augmentation, if the bone is very weak, then a healing period of up to nine months may be required before implantation can take place.

Good clean and welcoming dental practice. I took both of my children to get their teeth checked during the children's day during the half-term. They had colouring, face painting, children's TV shows , balloon, gift bags and very understanding staff. I would recommend this dental practice. As a Specialist Oral surgeon I’m lucky that I’ve not needed much Dentistry. I think we surgeons make the worst patients. I recently cracked a virgin tooth, the crack had propagated into the nerve. I’ve never know pain like it. Kreena has been a colleague that I have admired from afar and consulted a few times. For me there was only one choice. 7 hour round trip from Leicester to Brigstock to see this amazingly talented young lady. She is a consummate professional and excellent at her job. Saw Mr Hussain, the new dentist. I started off by explaining that I have a real fear of dentists, he was absolutely fantastic, explained what he was doing and then discussed what we could do with a particular tooth. I'm a new patient and this was my first visit, and first check up since covid, so I wasn't sure how things would go! I've been going to Nisma ever since I've been going to the dentist on my own. (I'm 24 now). She's my favourite so I'm sad to know that she'll be leaving to travel.😭I've recently got my crown fitted and it has turned out wonderful. She's worked very hard to adjust it and make it comfortable. Her assistant Yulianna is also so kind and caring. Couldn’t be more impressed with this dentist surgery. First visit was for wisdom tooth extraction. I’m very nervous about any kind of dental work and decided against sedation in the end as was so reassured by Nishma at the initial consultation. Gabi, the nurse who assisted her was amazing too and Kora on reception was lovely at making me feel calm for the appointment. I have been with Bristock Dentist for sometime now. I had gum disease and was referred to the hygienist for treatment.I met with this amazing, wonderful and lovely lady Nusarat Jahan who treated me with respect and love. She really showed much concern and had a wonderful treatment and advice on how to care for the gums to make my teeth stronger again to help keep them for sometime rather than extraction.I am doing my best to use the interdental brushes and also try to attend every session of my appointment to help keep both teeth and gums clean.I will recommend Bristock dentist and especially hygienist Nusarat Jahan to anyone who will need their services.
