Dental Crowns are used to repair and protect teeth that have been broken, weakened by decay or have very large fillings.

They can also be used in conjunction with other treatments like bridges or root canal treatment in order to ensure the full functionality of the tooth is restored.

The crown fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth. It can also be tooth coloured, which results in a more natural appearance so it blends in with the rest of your teeth.

A crown could be a good solution for you if you have large, discoloured fillings and would like to improve their appearance. Also, if you have had root canal treatment you may need a crown to protect or cap the restored tooth, allowing you to eat and bite down on it as if it were a real tooth. Crowns are also used to anchor a bridge or denture firmly in place in the mouth.

What are Dental Crowns made of?

Crowns are most commonly made of Porcelain, Zirconia, or a precious metal – such as gold. Porcelain is one of the most popular options when fitting crowns as it offers a highly durable surface that is also able to naturally mimic the tooth.

Not only can it be colour matched to the rest of the teeth, but it also reflects light in the same way as the natural surface of the tooth.

What does the Dental Crown treatment involve?

The Dental Crown procedure is usually completed over two appointments. At the first appointment we will remove any of the decayed, damaged or weakened parts of the tooth and prepare it for the crown. We will then take an impression or scan of the tooth and fit you with a temporary crown.

There is usually then a wait of up to two-weeks while the crown is made for you at our dental laboratory. Dental crowns are designed and made custom for each patient, and once yours is ready, we will cement it into place at the second appointment.

What should I expect after the Dental Crown has been cemented?

The area around the tooth being treated is likely to feel sensitive for a few days after the treatment. You may experience some soreness and we will advise you to be gentle when brushing your teeth.

Once any soreness or sensitivity has receded you can proceed to care for your crown as you would your natural tooth – with twice-daily brushing for two-minutes, regular flossing, and frequent dental check-ups.
